This week we say the announcements of 2K Sports Basketball putting Michael Jordan in the Cover of NBA 2K11 and Wayne Gretzky on the Cover of an upcoming Wii Title from EA Sports titled NHL SLAPSHOT.

I really must ask… A basketball player that has not been in the league sine 2003 (as a player) and a retired Hockey All Star – are planning on being the selling feature for these two titles?!? REALLY?

Maybe the Madden Curse is real and it’s expanding to the other sports titles… using Retired Athletes may be soon be the only option to protect a sports career.

I kid of course – MJ and Gretzky are both fantastic Athletes and covers are well deserved for both.

Role Playing games have certainly changed in the last few years with increasingly complex (in some cases confusing) stories, stunning graphics, moral decisions and while this is good, I still feel that they’re missing some of the emotion that was synonymous with RPGs and the stories they presented.

Enter Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, the remake to a remake which originally debuted on the Sega CD and was then ported with updated graphics and audio on the PSOne. One of my most beloved Sega CD and PSOne treasures, I revisit the Lunar series quite often on either of those systems and can honestly say that it’s a game that has stood the test of time. The folks over at XSeed clearly felt the same way about Lunar as the recently released PSP remake shows in abundance.

Lunar: The Silver Star Harmony is the story of a young boy named Alex who idolizes Dragon Master Dyne, a man who saved the world many years ago. With his friends, Luna, Ramis and Nall, Alex sets out on a quest to follow in the footsteps of his hero.

The game utilizes classic RPG controls, turn based battle sequences, an awesome soundtrack coupled with some great Anime style cut scenes and effective voice acting. The remake of the Sega CD version was a huge step up when it was released on the PSOne and I can say that the jump to the PSP while not the same step up, is a damn fine representation of what Lunar is.

The voice actors have been changed up and new dialogue was added to the game as were some new story elements which I loved. While the game is smaller on smaller system that mean we get smaller dungeons, cities and cut scenes, but, I must say that the team at XSeed did a great job at preserving the game that I fell in love with so many years ago. They did however update the graphics in a big way and that makes this game the prettiest in the series.
The Lunar series still one of my favorites and clearly it’s still a favorite of many people out there as any search on eBay will show you the game can still catch over $100 for the PSOne. Xseed has done a masterful job at brining this series to the masses and a new generation of gamers who really should give it a try. Can you go wrong on a handheld game that delivers 15+hrs of gameplay?

Pros:

Best looking version of the series

Holds up well still today

Soundtrack is fantastic

New Story Elements

Cons:

Smaller Dungeons

Feed Your Console gives Lunar: Silver Star Harmony a 9.5 out of 10

Today Sony Computer Entertainment announced that it had acquired game developer Media Molecule, creators of LittleBigPlanet for the PS3 and PSP.

Quote from the release by Alex Evans – Co-founder of Media Molecule:

“Since Media Molecule’s inception, we’ve had a uniquely close relationship with SCE. Over the years they have consistently shown their dedication to Creative Gaming and Media Molecule, not only through their support of the company, but their willingness to take risks and embrace our often unusual approach and ideas,” said Evans. “What we’ve achieved already with LittleBigPlanet has proved this to us and we’re excited by this new chapter of innovation and creative gaming, for all involved.”

Media Molecule will be joining the ranks of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) and will bolster the already phenomenal talents of 15 game development studios located in Japan, the USA, the UK and The Netherlands.

Congrats to the Media Molecule team and to SCE for finding a great partner and talented studio.

Fans of Assassin’s Creed have been patiently waiting for over two years to join Desmond and return to the Animus. Picking up right where Assassin’s Creed left us, trapped in a room by the Knight Templar scientist your quickly brought in to new series of intrigues and deception. In walks Lucy, not seen since mid adventure in Assassin’s Creed, and your adventures begins.

Desmond is introduced to the Animus 2.0 and a new team of research assistants… There is where we meet Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young Italian nobleman, the latest of Desmond’s ancestors. A man trying to do the right thing, but unwittingly is forced into the life of the assassin to avenge the wrongs done to his family. It assist in this Ezio looks to his uncle for direction, a man that ultimately puts Ezio on the path of the Assassin. Ezio’s Mother and Sister will also be around for you to interact with, living at the family estate and offering assistance when you take the time to visit.

Making several key upgrades to the game play have taken care of the repetitive investigations and beat up missions that plagued AC. No longer do you need to complete these side quests in order to advance your missions. Also the addition of Assassin history side quests brings a nice challenge to players and a fantastic reward – I highly recommend you do all of these quests as soon as they are made available to you the reward is worth it! With a great storyline your going to find that this is a game your not going to want to turn off.

Also introduced into AC2 you will find a number of economic features including the ability to purchase new weapons, armour and upgrades for Ezio from local blacksmiths. You will also find Doctors (health no longer regenerates), Painting shops (with Treasure Maps) and Tailors (for a quick outfit change). Taking the time to upgrade the town at your family villa will have long time rewards and added benefits later in the game – take the time to do this. The ideas of pickpocketing the local populous and looting your targets have been improved and NPCs will actually make a fuss when you pull a few coins from their purse, raising your notoriety and increasing the interests from the local guards. Lowering your notoriety can also bee accomplished in several different manors, understanding these and taking advantage of them will help you blend back into the crowd.

Armed with new weapons (swords, knives, daggers and some little tricks to surprise your targets and the guards chasing you) your going to have to make use of all the available tools you have at your disposal. Where the game has some issues resolves in the speed running across building tops, Ezio has the same random jumping problem that Altair was prone to – dropping from building tops at random or unexpected intervals. Major improvements however resolve to the fact that Ezio can; swim, jump to higher ledges and has a number of secret tricks up his sleeves for the unsuspecting if your willing to spend the dough to learn them.

The graphics have also been vastly improved over the first game, adding in new Animus level transitions, taller buildings and better environmental effects your going to feel like your truly running all over 14th century Italy. Cut scenes and animated sequences are well scripted and the voice acting is fantastic.

Don’t worry Altair fans – your noting going to be complete without him in this story line, Desmond and Lucy will talk often of him and you might actually catch a glimpse of him during your game play.

Pros:

Fantastic storyline, voice acting and visual upgrades

Economic elements are worth every penny

Weapon and armour variety

Upgradeable skills

Assassin history side missions are fantastic

Special combat skills can be purchased

Cons:

Free Running issues are still a bit unruly
